Memo To Giants: Please Keep Barry

We know, we know. Playing in the National League isn't doing his body any favors. But we gotta have him on the Giants when he hits home run number 756. Sure, we'd love to have Manny-Being-Manny's bat. Let's hang on to Barry one more year. If we sign Rich Aurilia, who last year was as close to his 2001 form as he's been since 2001, and Dave Roberts, we can pick up some home runs and stolen bases to make up the difference between Barry and Manny. If this makes sense, please let us know. If it doesn't, well, we claim to be experts on virtually nothing.

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGHGHGRRGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Hey all you Niners fans, let's take a look a this, shall we?

Fourth quarter winding down. 49ers have a 14-13 lead. And look! They are eating up the clock with a steady running game. Yardage, yardage, yardage...
1st and 10 at SF 18 (11:28) F.Gore up the middle to SF 22 for 4 yards (C.Chavous).

2nd and 6 at SF 22 (10:58) F.Gore left tackle to SF 26 for 4 yards (B.Chillar).

3rd and 2 at SF 26 (10:11) A.Smith pass short right to A.Battle pushed ob at SF 32 for 6 yards (R.Bartell).

1st and 10 at SF 32 (9:53) F.Gore up the middle to SF 43 for 11 yards (P.Tinoisamoa, O.Atogwe).

1st and 10 at SF 43 (9:13) F.Gore up the middle to SL 39 for 18 yards (R.Bartell).

1st and 10 at SL 39 (8:28) M.Hicks left end to SL 34 for 5 yards (B.Chillar).

2nd and 5 at SL 34 (7:45) M.Hicks up the middle to SL 28 for 6 yards (B.Chillar).

1st and 10 at SL 28 (7:07) F.Gore left guard to SL 25 for 3 yards (F.Brown).

2nd and 7 at SL 25 (6:28) M.Hicks right guard to SL 16 for 9 yards (O.Atogwe).

1st and 10 at SL 16 (5:46) M.Hicks up the middle to SL 13 for 3 yards (C.Wroten).

2nd and 7 at SL 13 (5:06) M.Robinson left tackle to SL 7 for 6 yards (F.Brown).

3rd and 1 at SL 7 (4:20) M.Robinson left tackle to SL 7 for no gain (B.Chillar, R.Smith).
Whoops. So, one running play gets stopped, and it's now fourth-and-1.

With all these successful running plays going, what does Mike Nolan opt to do?

FIELD GOAL.

To paraphrase Gregg Easterbrook in his Tuesday Morning Quarterback, we immediately wrote in our notebook, Game Over, Niners Lose.

WHAT

THE

HELL?????????????????

One more run, to get that one more yard, and the game is over.

BUT NO.

We had to go for the field goal.

Jesus.

Rams score a touchdown in the final minute and win, and the Niners, who -- amazingly -- had a chance at making the playoffs, are now done for the year. Done. It is over. No playoffs this year, all because of one ridiculous play-call.

Unreal.

Well, Crap.

Our pre-season MLS pick of Colorado beating D.C. United in the MLS Cup isn't going to happen. They both lost in their respective semifinal matches. Awww, foo. But we didn't know anything about it anyway.
